World of Warcraft Online – Millions of Players Online

Posted on Feb 28, 2009 under War of Warcraft | No Comment

I remember years ago when I wanted to play a game I had to ask my closest friends. We finally sat down either at the kitchen table or occasionally in the living room. Nowadays it is different. Do not get me wrong I still like to play a good game of Monopoly once in a while but who wants to play with me if I feel the urge of playing at 2:00 am?. This problem is gone, now I just have to fire up my trusty computer and go online with a gaming universe. It can be night or day, any days of the week, there is always people ready for playing. No more asking to get my friends to play with me. I guess you have heard about World of Warcraft online? If not well, you might have been living under a rock or you are simply not interested in online games. Let me tell you about this great game.

Azeroth is a world in which lengthy and tumultuous history is forged in the fires of continuous conflict. It has been four years since great chaos reigned over this burned world and King Arthas of Lord Aeron was driven mad by recurring visions of the Frozen Thrown of Icecrown. As it was inevitable, history now repeats itself as armies of the Horde and the Alliance prove their mettle on battlegrounds and clash weapons and magic in huge, organized territorial wars. Be careful your time has come.

Choose a side, hone your abilities, and print your mark on Azeroth history. World of Warcraft is the first MMOG in the four part Warcraft series, with previous Warcraft titles being RTS games. Like most MMOs, players can find adventure in fighting many kinds of monsters and in performing missions given by many NPCs throughout Azeroth.

In World of Warcraft, success in these actions yield rewards in the form of money, loot and experience. Players can also take part in PvP battles in the forms of dueling and fights with gamers of different factions. Most monsters and quests can be handled solo in the early to middle stages of exploration around Azeroth. Beyond that point, however, more and more gameplay will require a good team of gamers, generally two to five in number. Large-scale raids can require up to 40 gamers to succeed. At level 40, gamers can get a mount based on their character’s race and reputation, which can appear at will. These are expensive to purchase and train, but add to the player’s status and very much increase their speed of travel.

Unfortunately, gamers can not engage in combat while on a mount. The cap level in World of Warcraft is now 70 with the new game expansion, with rewards for successful raids at this level being in the form of exceptional loot. Since the first day back in November 2004, I have played World of Warcraft, and I can say that this great online game is exciting to play!

Just a little advice regarding online gaming. It is sure a lot of fun but do not lose too much sleep over it or your best friends for that matter. There will be new games coming out for years to come. What is new today will be old tomorrow. But a good friend is worth a lot more to me and last a lot longer.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008: A Radical Rethink Of Soccer

Posted on Feb 20, 2009 under Pro Evolution Soccer | No Comment

Konami, within the Pro Evolution Soccer series, has a video game of association football by the name of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 has been released for Wii, Windows, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, as well as PlayStation 2, and the Xbox 360. There is a demo of the PS3 version available for convenient downloading right from within the PlayStation Store; there has been a demo for the Xbox 360 that has been released within the Xbox Live Marketplace and a demo for the PC that has also been released.

The Wii version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, which was named in Japan as the Winning Eleven Play Maker 2008 radically, differs from all of the other different versions. However, the basic game play is mainly focused mainly on pointing the remote for the Wii exactly right at the screen and then directing all of the players by actually dragging them using the cursor on the screen, and passing can be completed by simply pointing right to the desired player or space and then pressing the button. In turn, this allows the player to experience a game approach that is more tactical, because there is just about total freedom in moving every player that you would like anywhere on the screen, and a lot more maneuvers and tactics which can be used more within the attacking game than it has ever been before.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 omits Champions Road Master League, which allows the player tour through a whole slew of completely different leagues that are located around Europe, and during the time that the game is on, it is nearly impossible to get the players that come from all of the defeated teams. It also features a mode online in which Konami refers to as the absolute best experience, when Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 is compared to all of the other versions…

The Nintendo’s Wii version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 generally received a lot more positive reviews in comparison to all of the other versions. Some of the new features that are included in PES 2008 are listed as follows:

1) Teamvision, which is an Al System that is new proprietary adaptive.
2) Improved graphics like shirt creasing and facial animation.
3) Twenty Four Stadiums for the PlayStation 2 version.
4) Thirty Stadiums for the Nintendo Wii version.
5) Increased Techniques dribble on the ball.
6) Shirt and Diving pulling available on next-generation only.
7) New set pieces systems which allow the gamer to make all of the taller players so that they are able to come up for the free kicks and corners as well as total control of the wall.
8) The database for the Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 will be accurate until August 31st, 2007.
9) The facial import like in Virtua Tennis 3 by using the USB webcam.

All-in-all, the Nintendo Wii’s version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 offers the exact same level of realism that has established the series like the definitive football title, however it has experienced a radical rethink in order to make the best of the control system that the Wii’s has, which is motion-sensitive. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 for the Nintendo Wii has six different game modes, League and Cup elements, spanning match, Trade and Training section. The new version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 also features what is known as an exclusive competition on Champions Road, in which, the players are able to take the team that they have chosen to compete within the league competitions that take place all over the world.

“a Peek Thru the Clouds” – Cloud Storage in 2009

Posted on Feb 18, 2009 under Need Fos Speed | No Comment

2008 is the year that “cloud” captured the imagination of the technology early-adopters. And the interest is not just in Silicon Valley or the U.S.  ParaScale, for instance, has had hundreds of software download requests over the past few months from around the globe. But vendors should be under no illusion at this point that mainstream IT shops understand all the hype.

However, “cloud-ware” is more than the next shiny thing on the IT roadmap. Cloud applications/compute/storage is driving the next generational shift in the evolution of IT.  Over the next decade, IT deployments are going to include a blend of mainframe, client-server, and 3-tier-apps with cloud configurations becoming an increasing and very significant part of the mix. Even with the bottom falling out of the market, cloud technologies have continued to generate interest as it is seen as a way to optimize IT costs.

In 2009, users will be presented with a lot of choice, especially with cloud computing and cloud storage. When users thought of cloud-ware in 2008 they were thinking about cloud applications like SalesForce and Google Apps, cloud computing services like Amazon EC2, or cloud storage like Amazon S3. These are all public cloud services in that the offering is delivered across a public network. The private cloud option, where infrastructure services (i.e. IaaS – Infrastructure as a Service) like cloud computing or cloud storage are made available as a service over a private network, became strongly established in the vernacular in the latter half of 2008. But it will be 2009 before customers have enough vendor choice and adoption starts taking root.

In the cloud storage space, 2008 saw announcements from vendors like EMC (ATMOS hardware + software offering) and ParaScale (software on commodity hardware offering) about packaged cloud storage technologies. With the excitement around cloud storage, there was also activity from vendors making forays from adjacent storage segments, as they announced “cloud-like” storage. Overall, these various packaged options are going to enable both businesses and service providers with their deployments, as they don’t have to undertake custom engineering projects as was the case in 2008.

In 2009 we will see two driving trends:
1. The arrival of private cloud storage options with increasing choices for businesses looking to deploy their own storage clouds inside the firewall
2. A rapid proliferation of public cloud storage service options, with many service providers coming to market with varied services, competing with a market-leading Amazon S3.

Let‘s peek through these clouds.

Many early-adopter enterprises, especially in the U.S. and Europe, will start trialing private storage clouds in 2009. They are going to discover that cloud storage is a very effective way to constrain burgeoning tier 2 storage needs especially in archival applications. By starting small, these IT shops will be able to take measured steps into the cloud. Enterprises will also discover that private clouds will allow data-access via familiar enterprise protocols like NFS, FTP, CIFS allowing drop-in to existing enterprise IT, versus public clouds that typically work with newer web-friendly protocols like WebDAV and REST. On a different note, many rich content businesses (delivering applications like image hosting, video streaming), where storage is a very material cost of doing business, will also be looking to see if cloud storage can make the underlying economics of their businesses more robust. These kinds of businesses typically look to monetize eyeballs (in a weak advertising market), or are trying to get to affordable subscription models, and anything that contains their cost-to-serve in an uncertain economy can only be good.

Looking at the second key trend, 2009 will be the year that public cloud services really breakout. Today the storage service buyer is faced with a few limited choices (Amazon S3, Rackspace, etc). Amazon’s S3 is a very credible solution, but it is a 1-size-fits-all-cloud. With archiving application and streaming application, you have one cloud. Many customers like what S3 offers, but it is a case of “you can have any color so long as it is black”.

In 2009, the many service providers of all sizes, observing the success of Amazon S3 and looking to compete, will be able to leverage packaged cloud storage platforms to enter the market. They can avoid undertaking an open-ended engineering project with unknown scalability challenges, as was the situation in 2008. Instead service providers and hosting companies will be able to focus on that which they do best – service creation and service delivery. Expect to see the following dynamics in the service provider-driven public cloud storage space:

* Real customer choice! Providers creating different kinds of storage clouds by selecting different kinds of underlying commodity hardware. Deployments of archival clouds (cheap CPU, less memory, many SATA disks) versus. streaming media clouds (powerful multi-core CPU, more RAM, SAS drives).
* Smaller providers getting into the cloud storage service business, with focused CAPEX outlays, and satisfying the needs of local SMBs and regional businesses. Customers could even drive down to the local hosting company and get TBs for a fast emergency recovery.
* Service providers building many small and mid-sized (50-200 node) clouds, vs one uber-cloud, thus ensuring better stability, more isolation, and flexible DR-options across multiple locations.
* Hosting providers getting into the business by offering managed cloud storage services for enterprises by bringing up mini-clouds for enterprises in their own racks. Now hosting providers have a way to participate in the wave of interest in private cloud storage.

Recessions in many cases assist in the adoption of cost-saving technologies. This seems to be the case with the various cloud technologies. The brakes are being applied for non-urgent infrastructure projects, yielding more time for IT staff to focus on ways to be frugal in must-spend areas like storage. On current trajectory, 2009 is definitely going to be the break-out year for private and public cloud storage in the early-adopter segment, with 2010 starting the penetration into the mainstream market.

Sajai Krishnan is CEO of ParaScale, a Silicon Valley startup focused on addressing the exploding bulk storage requirements for digital content and archival data.

How to Beat a Fastball Pitcher at Their Own Game

Posted on Feb 18, 2009 under Hit Man | No Comment

The pitcher is well known for his fastball. Your ace hitters are either knocking it foul or whiffing it altogether. There is a secret to beating a hard fastball Pitcher.

Fastball Pitchers are accustomed to having their way at the plate. Very little unravels their poise. They know their job and they know it well. Throw hard and throw strikes.

Occasionally their zest sends an unwitting batter to first on a free trip. Pitchers console themselves with the knowledge that all wounds will heal. It is merely a bruise, it will heal, well in time anyway.

They are the heroes of their team. Strike after strike, batter after batter, the offense is retired quickly. Amidst the slaps on the back and the cheers from the crowd. Yes, commanding Pitchers are revered.

Your number is called up to the on deck. A dynamite batting average you do not posses. From the on deck circle you check your swing to match his speed. Whoosh, the ball passes over the plate and you hear the pop of the catchers mitt with the bat in your hand only part way through the swing.

How can you beat this monster? What can you do to get that Pitcher to back off on his speed an accuracy. Is there anything that can be done to shake this guy up?

These Pitchers are determined to set the pace and play the game their way. A self centered approach to winning the game at the plate. If you let them own the plate they will take you as well.

On your side you have a great skill. An innate ability that will take the pride out of any fastball Pitcher. You have the cunning to rock this pitcher on the mound mid throw. A four letter word that has won hundreds of games. The most singular act of unnerving a pitcher available. You have the bunt!

Bunting a baseball does far more work against a Pitcher than what is obvious. First, you want to time your switch in stance to be a little earlier, you want the Pitcher to see what you are doing as he takes the ball from his glove.

When the Pitcher is aware the ball will be put in play, their first reaction is to prepare to get off the mound to run it down. More often then not, instead of keeping his toe dug into the mound for the entirety of their throw, the Pitcher will bring their plant foot forward in anticipation of making the dash.

By taking their foot off the mound, they loose a substantial amount of power which results in a slower ball and change in accuracy as they have changed their mechanics. Could be a strike, could hit the batter, could puff the dirt in front of home plate. The reality is you have forced the pitcher to play your game.

Now that you have made the monster move to your tune it is time to dig it in a little deeper. No matter who is pitching, when a Batter bunts, the likely hood he will make contact with the ball is very high. It may roll foul, it may bounce off home plate. But the fact of the matter is you hit a pitch from the monster.

When a Pitcher becomes used to striking out Batters, they develop the need for more strikes and less hits. Hitting the ball in any fashion wears on them. Best of all, there is nothing they can do to stop it. You are going to show bunt and aside from throwing a wild pitch, you are going to put the bat on the ball.

Every time you force the Pitcher to change his pattern you are breaking them down to play your game. Every time you put the bat on the ball you force the defense to wake up and earn the out.

Bunting is much more useful that just as a sacrifice to move a man on bases. If you get several other players on your team to play the same tune with this fire throwing monster, his rhythm will end and so will the onslaught of hard pitches. Beat the monster with a bunt.
